Abstract

802,295. Gauging alignment. KING INSTRUMENT CO. July 18, 1956, No. 22297/56. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] Apparatus to determine the relative alignment of machine parts, comprises a pair of spaced standards 11, 12, and a cross-bar 13, carrying spirit levels, extending therebetween, one of the standards being adjustable with respect to the cross-bar longitudinally thereof and the cross-bar being adjustable with respect to one of the standards longitudinally thereof, one of the standards having at one end means 20 for providing a single point engagement with a plane surface and the other being provided with a tubular member 21, Fig. 4, having a pair of spaced supporting means 23 at its ends engageable with a machine way of any one of a plurality of various types. Each of the pair of supports 23 is spaced from the other transversely to the cross-bar and the apparatus includes indicating means 36, 37, 29 by which the relative alignment of the machine parts is determined. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus being used to align a flat way and a male V-way. It is placed in the position shown and clamps 14, 15 which provide for the adjustment between the standards and the cross-bar are tightened. Spirit levels 36, 37, having fine adjustment means incorporated in them are then levelled. Once this has been done, the surfaces beneath the ball 20 and the member 21 become reference surfaces. The apparatus is then moved along the V-way and any misalignment of the surfaces relative to the reference surfaces will be reflected in the spirit levels 36, 37, and can be removed by handscraping. Fig. 3 shows the apparatus being used to true up one side of a male V-way after a flat-way and a first V-way have been aligned relative to each other. An annular member 44 is used to eliminate the effect of any minor scores existing in the flat-way. A dial indicator 29, the stem 30 of which is clamped to the cross-bar 13 is set at zero when its point 31 registers against the wall to be aligned. The apparatus is then moved along the V-way and any misalignment will be reflected in the dial indicator 29 and can be eliminated as before. The apparatus is also described in use to align a female dovetail way, and a female V-way. It can also be used to align the spindle of a machine with a bed way.
