Abstract

A friction element, e.g. a brake shoe for a railway or other vehicle comprises an aluminium silicate filler selected from a naturally occurring or synthetic kyanite, sillimanite, andalusite, mullita, topaz, and dumortierite, dispersed throughout a binder matrix of natural or synthetic rubber. The element may comprise up to 20 per cent by weight of cast iron particles, 10 per cent or above of comminuted aluminium silicate mineral, 20 per cent by weight of organic or carbonaceous friction material, e.g. petroleum coke, a minor proportion of finely divided lead, about 12.2 to 15 per cent of natural or synthetic rubber binder, and vulcanizing ingredients. Minor quantities of asbestos and lead sulphide may also be included. Examples are described in which the binder comprises (a) butadienestyrene copolymer, cashew nut shell liquid polymer, sulphur and accelerators, and (b) butadiene-styrene copolymer, cumene hydroperoxide as vulcanizing agent, litharge and zinc oxide.ALSO:A friction element, e.g., a brake shoe for a railway or other vehicle comprises an aluminium silicate filler selected from a naturally occurring or synthetic kyanite, sillimanite, andalusite, mullite, topaz, and dumortierite, dispersed throughout a binder matrix of natural or synthetic rubber. The element may comprise up to 20 per cent by weight of cast iron particles, 10 per cent or above of comminuted aluminium silicate mineral, 20 per cent by weight of organic or carbonaceous friction material, e.g., petroleum coke, a minor proportion of finely divided lead, about 12,2 to 15 per cent of natural or synthetic rubber binder, and vulcanizing ingredients.
