Abstract

The composition brake block forming the subject of the parent Specification is modified by the incorporation therein of up to 30 per cent by weight of a staple organic reinforcing fibre, and the binder matrix comprises a heat resistant rubber, vulcanized in situ, and selected from natural rubber, polychlorbutadiene, and butadiene-styrene, and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers. The staple organic reinforcing fibre may be of wood, cellulose flock, viscose, rayon, cellulose acetate, cotton, wool, silk, alginate, polyamide, polyethylene, polyhaloethylene, polyester, polytetrahaloethylene, polyacrylonitrile which may be thermally modified, or other cellulose, protein, or synthetic polymeric material. The block preferably comprises 25 to 75 per cent of ferrous metals, at least 50 per cent of which consists of cast iron chips or granules, 10 to 60 per cent by weight of friction particles, either of hard vulcanized rubber containing 50 to 70 per cent of inorganic fillers and vulcanizing ingredients, or of synthetic resins such as polymerized cashew nut shell oil, up to 30 per cent, preferably 2 to 12 per cent by weight of staple reinforcing fibre, and from 8 to 32 per cent by weight of a rubber matrix, vulcanized in situ and comprising 2 to 12 per cent by weight of the block of the selected rubber and 4 to 20 per cent by weight of the block of inorganic and organic fillers and vulcanizing ingredients such as sulphur, litharge, zinc oxide, carbon black and barytes. The rubber matrix may be stiffened with up to 6 per cent by weight of the block of a thermosetting resin such as phenolaldehyde or cashew nut shell oil resin. Specification 728,296 is referred to.
