Class 120(2) In a multiple yarn winding machine all the bobbin carrying spindles are driven in unison from a common drive shaft and a non-variable mechanical connection is provided between these spindles and the associated yarn guides, the spindles being driven through the medium of a common variable speed gear which is responsive to, and varied as a result of, the changes in the sum of the tensions in all the yarns to be wound, relatively to a predetermined value of this sum, whereby the speed of the spindle is reduced when the sum of the tensions exceeds this value, and vice versa. In the arrangement shown, the yarn feeding cylinders 40, the take up spindles 20 and the traverse yarn guides 29 are driven from a common shaft 22; the cylinders 40 by direct contact; the spindles 20 through gearing 23, 24, variable speed mechanism 41, 42, 43, shaft 25 and chain drive 26, 27, 28; and the yarn guides 29 from the shaft 25 through gearing 32, 33, cam 31 and lever 35. The yarns pass from cylinders 40 over fixed rollers 47, around rollers 48 on a sliding carriage 44, over further fixed rollers 47 and thence to the traverse guides 29 and on to the bobbins 21. The carriage 44 is connected to the centre roller 43 of the variable speed device and the effect of yarn tension on the carriage 44 is counterbalanced by a weight 45. Variations in yarn tension moves the roller 43 thus changing the speed of shaft 25, and hence spindles 20 and traverse guides 29 so as to counter the variation and thus maintain the tension at a substantially constant predetermined value.
