Abstract

751,166. Winding yarn. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. May 18, 1954 [July 8, 1953], No. 14542/54. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group. XXXV] A winding machine comprises a rotatable winding spindle, means for traversing yarn, an electric motor having variable speed characteristics for driving the spindle, an alternating current supply for the motor, a saturable reactor having a load winding and a control winding, said load winding being in series with the motor and supply line, means adapted to engage the running yarn prior to its engagement by the traversing means and to move in response to tension changes therein, a source of direct current connected to the control winding, and means operated by the movement of the yarn - engaging means to control the flow of direct current through the control winding whereby the amount of current flowing through the load winding and motor is varied to vary the speed of the motor. As shown, yarn Y is fed at constant speed over an idler roll 84, under a dancer roll 82 carried by an arm 80 attached to a rotatable wheel 74 and thence to the reciprocated yarn guide 16 for winding on the core on the holder 24. A magnetic core 62, carried by a flexible tape 78 suspended from the periphery of the wheel 74, is arranged to co-operate with a coil 50 forming part of a bridge arrangement 42 fed with current from the secondary winding of a transformer 40 connected across the A.C. supply lines 30, 32. As the winding tension in the yarn Y varies, the core 62 will be raised or lowered in the coil 50 to produce a degree of unbalance in the bridge 42 so that current will flow in the conductors 52, 54, which on being rectified by the full wave rectifier 56 will flow in the control coil of the saturable reactor 38 to vary the current supplied to the motor 28. The supply line to the motor preferably includes a variable resistance 36 to a single pole single throw switch 34 which, in the event of yarn breakage or failure, is opened by a contact moved by a spoke of the wheel 74. The weight of the core 62 is compensated by a spring 92 connected to a lever 96 and to the hub of the wheel 74. For the purpose of gradually reducing the winding tension as the package builds up, an adjustable linkage 104, 108, 100, 96, moved by the traverse frame 20 as it recedes from the winding spindle 14, gradually lessens the spring-tension 92. In order that the spring- tension 92, operating through the linkage 96, 100, 108, 104, shall not unduly effect the pressure of the yarn guide upon the package, two modified forms of linkage are described through which the lever 96 is connected to the link 108 by way of an adjustable cam and lever-follower arrangement.
