706,006. Winding and unwinding yarns etc.; driving and tensioning regulating. BRADLEY, W. July 20, 1950 [July 26. 1949], No. 19612/49. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for controlling the winding and unwinding of 'flexible material, e.g. yarns, fibres, filaments, bands, tapes, web &c. passing between two carriers 3, 4, includes rollers 6, 7 over which the material passes, driven by a chain-drive 8 which passes over a pulley 8a on a spindle carrying a gear 9 which may be selectively engaged with either of engaged gears 11; 12 which are constantly driven by means of a motor 13. As shown the gear wheel 9 meshes with the gear 12 so that the material is wound on to the carrier 3 and off the carrier. 4. The gear wheels 11, 12 form part of a pair of friction clutches Fig. 2 (not shown), of any known type which are controlled by movement of pivoted bell-crank levers 30. The material passes over guide bars 25 set in position by a lever 28 and linkage 26, 27, and also over feeler bars 24 mounted on the levers 30. These levers are each provided with dashpots 31 and counter-balancing weights 32. In operation should the tension increase both the levers 30 will be rotated so as to raise the weight 32 thereby causing the friction clutches to slip, decreasing the drive on the carrier 3 and decreasing the braking effect on the carrier 4. If the tention decreases the levers 30 move in the direction to increase the drive on the carrier 3 and increase the braking effect on. the carrier 4. The levers 30 are connected together by a rod 29a pivotally connected at one end to one lever 30 and slidable through it connected to the other lever 30 with a spring-loading at 29b between the latter lever connected and an adjusting nut 29c. The levers 30 may then be adjusted towards or away from each other to vary the initial tension.
