Abstract

802,106. Universal joints. THACKERAY & SON, Ltd., and THACKERAY, A. W. July 27, 1956 [Dec. 20, 1955; June 6, 1956]. Nos. 36515/55 and 17553/56. Class 80 (2). A universal joint comprises forked arms 3 recessed to carry pins 7, each of which in turn carries rotatably a ring 11, adjacent surfaces 13 of the four rings being in rolling contact with each other. As shown, bearing rollers 12 support the rings 11 on the pins 7, but other forms of anti-friction bearing may be employed. The inner concave ends 15 of the pins 7 engage slidably with a ball 14. The moving parts of the joint are enclosed within a two-part spherical casing 21 seating at 20a on the rings 11. As shown in Fig. 3, the contacting surfaces 13 of the rings 11 are at 45 degrees to the axes of the rings, but in alternative forms, the surfaces 13 are at other angles and are concavo-convex in shape. According to the second Provisional Specification, when the ball 14 is used, the rolling surfaces 13 of the rings 11 may be omitted.
