Abstract
802,105. Stabilizing ships. DEUTSCHE WERFT A.G. Oct. 12, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954 . Dec. 8, 1954], No. 29110/55. Class 113. A device for damping the rolling of ships comprising angularly movable stabilizing surfaces (22 in the embodiment shown in Fig. 10 and 4 in the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2) has a two part gear, one part being driven continuously by an electric motor 1 and the other part being reversible and connected through a lever 15 to the shaft 16 about the axis of which the stabilizer moves to damp the rolling motion of the ship, the two parts being interconnected through an electro-magnetic coupling 2 actuated by a gyroscope (not shown) and thus influenced by rolling movement of the ship. When the coupling 2 is energized, a brake 5 is automatically lifted by a releasing magnet 6 and a shaft 20 is driven until moving and fixed contacts 7, 8, which are set manually or controlled by a second gyroscope, align to interrupt the current to the coupling, thereby limiting the angle of rotation of the stabilizing surfaces. The shaft 20 carries a member 14 which slides in yokes 17 on the lever 15, which yokes allow the stabilizer to be rotated into the hull. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 this latter rotation takes place about a horizontal shaft 12 having levers 11 connected to pistons in cylinders supplied with oil by an electric pump, the electrical connections being such that the pump is inoperative when the motor 1 is running and vice versa. The aperture in the hull side is covered by a slide member 18. In Fig. 10 the stabilizer 22 is rotated in a horizontal plane about a vertical shaft 21 into a chamber 24.
