Abstract

892,769. Bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 6, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 11741/59. Class 12 (1). A rotary shaft journal bearing has means for controlling the flow of oil to or from a loaded region of the bearing surface and means responsive to lateral changes in the position of the shaft which vary the oil flow to oppose such positional changes and thus maintain the shaft in a predetermined position. The shaft 1 is in a sleeve 2 carried by a support 3 and the sleeve has a recess 4 supplied by oil through a passage 2a. A passage 5 leads from the recess 4 to a valve casing 6 having a double-headed pistonvalve 7 therein which controls communication between the passage 5 and an atmospheric or exhaust connection 9 when the bearing surface is subjected to light loading, or to a passage 10 connected to a pressurized oil source 11 when the loading becomes heavy. The movement of the valve 7 is controlled by a solenoid 8 actuated by a sensing-head 12 having a member 13 engaging the shaft so that lateral movements of the shaft cause electrical impulses to be transmitted to an amplifier 13a connected to the solenoid 8. The bearing may be pre-pressurized from the source 11 prior to the shaft being rotated.
