Abstract

801,676. Variable-speed gearing; friction gearing. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Aug. 3, 1956 [Aug. 5, 1955], No. 24033/56. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2). A continuously variable ratio gear which can drive either forwards or in rereverse comprises a gear member either made of or covered with a resilient wear-resistant material into which are pressed driving and driven grooved or toothed wheels. The gear member may be a belt or chain. As shown, a toothed driving gear 5 is pushed into a layer of resilient material 4 on a disc 2 rotatably supported by bearings 3 in a casing 1, a driven gear 8 similarly engaging another layer of resilient material on the other side of the disc. The driving and driven gears 5, 8 are moved axially to vary the velocity ratio by turning threaded spindles 7, 10 co-operating with control forks 6, 9. The resilient material 4 may be a cross-linked reaction product of polyesters and polyisocyanates. Instead of the manual control shown, the ratio selecting positions of the driving and driven gears 5, 8 may be controlled electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically.
