Class 64(3) In a heat exchanger comprising tubes through which a hot fluid is passed, some or all of the tubes are fitted with tapered cores extending into the tubes from their outlet ends, the cores being either hollow or solid and of " cigar " or " torpedo" shape, defined as a shape which increases in cross-sectional area from end to end but at a rate which diminishes from the tip towards the widest part. In a smoke or fire tube boiler described, the cores of all or groups of the tubes may be simultaneously moved longitudinally of the tubes thereby controlling the rate of flow of hot gases through the tubes by regulating the open area of the tube outlets. Fig. 1 shows a mild steel core 10 having a solid tip 18 of heat resisting steel alloy or other refractory material, the core being located within the tube 12 by two sets of spacing fins 22, 24, movement of the core within the tube being prevented by a stop pin 21 and a wire mesh 26. The core may be provided with spiral flutes 42 as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows an adjustable core 110 having an extra tapered section 120. In the position shown, the core has been moved to seal off the flow of gas through the tube should this be required. The cores may be mounted concentrically or eccentrically within the tubes.
