Abstract
801,181. Coal-cutter chains. HOY & CO., Ltd., A., and PROCTOR, S. E. Jan. 12, 1956 [Jan. 12, 1955; Feb. 22, 1955], Nos. 1012/55 and 5337/55. Class 24 A coal-cutter chain comprises links having flat bases and provided with guide means to run in a jib or like guide, toolcarrying bosses on their upper parts, and sprocket-engaging faces formed on the links between the bases and tool-carrying bosses so as to receive the sprocket teeth in the side of the link, and means connecting the links together so as to permit bending of the chain around a sprocket in a plane parallel to the plane of the link bases. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, each link has a flat base 12 provided with lateral projections to run in a jib, two ears 13 and 14 united by a web 15. and an eye portion 16 provided with a bush 18 to receive a hingepin 17 which is riveted flush with the ears 13 and 14. Each link has a boss 25 carrying a pick 26. The ears 13 and 14 of one link are a close fit in recesses 28 and 29 in an adjacent link to prevent undue backlash of the chain, and the ears 13 and 14 are of such a length as to leave a space 19 through which dirt can escape, between the eye portion 16 of one link and the web 15 of the adjacent link. The surfaces 20 and 21 of the web 15 and eye portion 16 respectively of a link are curved concentrically with the bush 18 and form the sprocketengaging surfaces. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, the links each have a flat base 32 with lateral guide projections 33, and a sprocket portion 34 having an extension 35 carrying a pick box 36 from which depends a stem 38 carrying a ball 39. The socket portion 34 is rounded off cylindrically to provide sprocket-engaging surfaces 41 and 42 separated by apertures 43 for the escape of dirt. Cylindrical stop faces 44 and 45 on the pick boxes 36 prevent reverse bending of the chain. The socket portions 34 may be provided with liners, for example in the manner shown in Specification 626,080, and the stems 38 may be detachably mounted in the pick boxes 36.
