An atomizer for attachment to an aircraft comprises a gauze drum rotatably and coaxially mounted on a perforated pipe so as to receive liquid on its inner surface, and means for rotating the drum. In Fig. 1 the drum comprises concentric gauze cylinders 41, 42 and 43 mounted on a fixed hollow spindle 10, and liquid is fed through the spindle and through passages 34 in a nut 29 screwed to one end of the spindle. The rotary assembly includes the drum and members 21 and 25 which rotate on bearings 13 and 20, and an air impeller 45, or a pulley driven by an air impeller, is secured to the member 21 and rotates the assembly. The cylinders 41-43 are supported between the member 25 and a cover-plate 39 attached to supports 35. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a hollow spindle 46 has bearings 51, 57 on which the gauze drum rotates, and liquid flows through the spindle and perforations 48 to the drum interior. The drum comprises aligned metal gauze cylinders 66 attached to annular plates 64 which surround a perforated tube 63. A pulley 58 is provided at one end of the drum and is driven by a belt 85, Fig. 5, from a pulley 79 rotated by a propeller 78. The pulley and propeller are fixed to a shaft and arranged one on either side of a bearing which accommodates the shaft. A support 81 extends from the bearing and has a cross-member 82 with lugs 83. A hollow boss 73 supports the end 72 of the spindle 46, and is attached to an upright 74 which rests on the aircraft. Diverging legs 76 also extend from the boss 73 and have lugs 77 which engage the lugs 83. The two pairs of lugs may straddle the spar of the aircraft wing and be attached to pivot screws 84 which engage the spar.
