Abstract

960,476. Crop sprayers. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 19, 1962 [Oct. 24, 1961], No. 37994/61. Heading B2F. Spraying equipment comprises a duct, an engine-driven fan within the duct to produce an air blast along the latter, a rotary atomizer at or adjacent the downstream end of the duct, and turbine blades for driving the atomizer disposed downstream of the fan and driven by the air blast, the turbine blades being of comparatively small pitch as compared with the blades of the fan. The term "pitch" is defined as the angle between a blade and a plane normal to the axis about which the blade rotates. The duct comprises four cowlings 1-4 bolted together. The fan blades 9 are mounted on a hub 10 and arranged at about 40 degrees to the duct axis. The fan is mounted directly on the crank-shaft 12 of an I.C. engine 8. A shaft 16 mounted in bearings 20, carries two turbine blades 14 arranged at about 80 degrees to the duct axis and a rotary atomizer 15. The latter comprises a gauze cylinder 18 and is supplied with liquid by a feed pipe 24. Fixed deflector blades 13 are mounted on a hub 19. A wired grill 37 and a lubricator 23 are provided. A shield 22 prevents the liquid running along the shaft 16 to the bearings 20. In operation the air blast impinging on the turbine blades rotates the turbine and hence the atomizer at a greater speed than the fan. The duct is mounted on the frame of the I.C. engine and a notched plate 26 secured to said frame is pivoted at 27 to a support 25, whereby the inclination of the spray is adjusted. Further, the support 25 has a flange 30 held in a mounting ring 32, whereby the horizontal direction of the spray is adjusted. In a modification, the fan hub 10 is extended in the downstream direction and the shaft 16 mounted in bearings therein.
