Abstract
632,065. Helicopters. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and FORSYTH, A. G. Jan. 23, 1948, No. 2161. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] In a jet-driven helicopter rotor, air is supplied to the jets n by an air compressor mounted on the rotor head, the impeller e being driven through epicyclic gearing comprising a sunwheel g fast with a stationary vertical shaft or pedestal a and planet pinions h carried by the compressor casing d. The rotor blades mare mounted for flapping and drag movements about pivots q, r, respectively, and the air from the compressor passes to the blades through flexible tubes x. Fuel is supplied through a pipe 13 to an annular chamber 12 in the rotor head, from which it passes through flexible pipes 11 to the blades. Additional air may be supplied to each of the jets through the inlet p of a duct o encircling the nozzle n. Collective and cyclic pitch adjustment of the blades is effected by a swash-plate 16, 17 connected to the blades by links 25. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the inlet to the compressor is furnished with a rotatable cowl provided with vanes to maintain the air intake in a forwardlyfacing direction, and the rotor is mounted on a ball-joint for tilting in any direction.
