Abstract
800,662. Electric soldering iron. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 22, 1956 [June 24, 1955], No. 18348/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVII] An electric soldering iron comprises a heating element housed in an expansible oil-filled chamber which is in intimate thermal contact with the soldering bit. In a preferred embodiment the heating element is thermostatically controlled, the thermostat switch (see Group XXXVII) being located in the handle of the soldering iron. As shown, a heating element 1, wound on an insulator 2, is enclosed in a metallic oil filled bellows 3 the forward end of which may be integral with the soldering bit 4 or adapted to provide a bit holder 12. Current to the element is supplied via a line cord and a switch 7 located in the handle 10. On heaing, the oil expands and elongates bellows 3 thus forcing a rod 5 back against an adjustable spring 6 to actuate the switch 7 and cut off the power, a slot 8 in the rod 5 engaging a slidable switch-operating pin 9.
