Abstract

Nylon filaments, e.g. for tooth brushes, are rendered bactericidal by treatment with an aqueous solution containing, for every 100 millilitres of water, from 80 to 120 millilitres of a water-soluble alcohol having from 1-4 carbon atoms per molecule, from 4 to 10 grams of a phenyl mercuric salt, e.g. phenyl mercuric acetate or a phenyl mercuric compound which forms a phenyl mercuric salt when dissolved in an acidic solution, and at least 2.0 grams of boric acid.ALSO:A composition for use in treating nylon filaments, e.g. on toothbrushes, to render them bacteriostatic comprises an aqueous solution containing, for every 100 millilitres of water, from 80 to 120 millilltres of a water-soluble alcohol, having from 1-4 C atoms per mol., e.g. ethanol, from 4 to 10 grams of a phenyl mercuric salt, e.g. phenyl mercuric acetate, or a phenyl mercuric compound which forms a phenyl mercuric salt when dissolved in an acidic solution and at least 2.0 grams of boric acid.
