Abstract

The invention comprises the quaternary salts of thonzylamine base, i.e. N : N-dimethyl-N1-(p - methoxybenzyl) - N1 - 2 - pyrimidyl) - ethylene diamine, obtained by quaternating the base with alkyl halides of up to 20 C atoms, or by reaction of halide salts with other silver halides, sulphate, or phosphate, or by reaction of the corresponding substituted ethyl halide with a dimethylalkylamine. In examples, the preparation of the quaternary ammonium methyl iodide, n-amyl bromide, lauryl bromide, n-decyl iodide, cetyl iodide, dodecyl iodide, cetyl bromide, cetyl sulphate, decyl nitrate, and dodecyl chloride are described; they are bacteriostatic and solubilizing agents for other antibacterial agents and antibiotics such as gramicidin, with l-phenylephrine hydrochloride and other ingredients, tyrothricin and subtilin.ALSO:The quaternary salts of thonzylamine base, i.e. N : N - dimethyl - N1 - (p-methoxybenzyl)-N1 - 2 - pyrimidyl) - ethylene diamine (see Group IV (b)) are bacteriostatic and serve as solubilizing agents for antibiotics such as gramicidin, tyrothricin and subtilin. 0.1 per cent of the thonzylamine cetyl or lauryl bromide is suitable for solubilizing a dispersion containing thonzylamine hydrochloride, l - phenylephrine hydrochloride, gramicidin, mono-basic and dibasic sodium phosphates and a preservative, comprising a mixture of methyl and propyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid.
