Abstract
800,581. Electroluminescence. GENERAL ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1957 [Jan. 25, 1956], No. 2501/56. Addition to 788,659. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent device is made of crystals coated with a translucent layer of electrolyte and compacted as in the parent Specification the crystals however in an uncoated condition being of a material which is not excitable to luminescence by a fluctuating electric field but is excitable to luminescence by cathode rays. In the examples, zinc sulphide activated by silver or phosphorous, zinc cadmium sulphide activated by copper or silver, calcium magnesium silicate activated by titanium, and cadmium chlorophosphate activated by manganese may be coated with potassium phosphate and zinc sulphide activated by silver or manganese, zinc cadmium sulphide activated by copper, cadmium borate activated by manganese, calcium chlorofluorophosphate activated by antimony and manganese, zinc silicate activated by manganese and calcium pyraphosphate activated by dysprosium may be coated with potassium silicate. It is stated that devices in accordance with the invention and with that of the parent Specification are excitable to luminescence by both D.C. and A.C.
