Abstract

782,095. Electroluminescence. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 1, 1954 [Feb. 4, 1953], No. 2917/54. Class 39(1). Electroluminescent sulphide powders are prepared by subjecting the photo- or cathodelumniescent powdered material to treatment with copper or copper-containing compounds and/or gold or gold-containing compounds to form a layer on the outer side of each particle which is higher in copper or gold content than the interior of the particle. The starting material has a lattice built up from one or more of the elements of each of the groups (1) zinc and cadmium, (2) sulphur and selenium, (3) silver, copper, lead, manganese, scandium, gallium, indium, phosphorus, arsenic, gold, antimony, chlorine, bromine and aluminium, the atomic ratio of the elements of groups 3 and 1 being from 10<SP>-6</SP> to 5.10<SP>-2</SP>. The treatment may be by immersion of the powdered material in a solution of copper or gold compounds, e.g. a À001M solution of copper sulphate or auric chloride ; the particles being afterwards dried at 100‹-180‹C. In another method, the copper or gold is deposited by vaporisation in vacuo and the material may already be in layer form on a metallised support as for an electroluminescent plaque. In another alternative, a copper or gold plate is mounted just above the powder in an atmosphere of rare gas and a discharge is passed between the plate and an anode to volatilize the copper or gold, the powder being agitated. The electroluminescence may be enhanced by further heating of the powder at a temperature of between 400‹C. and 800‹C. for a period of between a few minutes and a few hours. The Specification contains seven examples of the various processes used. Specifications 782,096 and 782,097 are referred to.
