Abstract

782,096. Electroluminescent materials. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1954 [Feb. 4, 1953], No. 3076/54. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent material comprises particles of material composed of at least one element of each of the groups (1) S and Se, (2) Zn and Cd, (3) Cu and Au, with the ratio of the elements of group 3 to group 2 between 10<SP>-3</SP> and 10-2, the content of the elements of group 3 being higher at the surface of the particles than in the interior thereof. Elements also present may be aluminium, scandium, gallium, indium, antimony, phosphorus, arsenic, cerium, samarium, praseodymium, silver, chlorine and bromium in elemental amounts not greater than the copper and/or gold. Up to 10 per cent of the elements of group 2 may be replaced by manganese. The copper or gold may be vaporized in a closed vessel and deposited on particles of the activated sulphides or selenides. Alternatively, the matrix compounds are wetted with solutions of the activator and fired in hydrogen sulphide. Specifications 782,095 and 782,097 are referred to.
