Abstract

1,219,705. Discharge lamps; cathode materials and processing. HITACHI Ltd. 7 May, 1969 [10 May, 1968], No. 23391/69. Heading H1D. A hollow cathode 1 in a lamp for atomic light absorption analysis is formed by a close mechanical linkage of fine wires of a predetermined dimension consisting of a metal having a relatively high melting point, gaps between said fine wires being filled with a predetermined quantity of a metal having a relatively low melting point. The high melting point wires may be ribbons of Ni or Cu, 200 Á or less in thickness and 0À5 mm. or less in width which may be arranged regularly to form the hollow cathode or may be arranged irregularly and compressed e.g. by press-moulding to form the cathode. Gaps between the wires are then filled with an alloy of alkali metal elements or with Se, Te, P or As by evaporation, or with Zn, Cd, In, Tl, Sn, Pb, Sb or Bi by impregnation, or with a metal powder. Wires of high melting point may be twisted together, some of the gaps filled with relatively low melting point powder, and the remaining gaps impregnated with a metal having a lower melting point than the powder. The relatively low melting point metal may also be in the form of wire e.g. of Fe. The wires of relatively high and relatively low melting points may be twisted together and compressed and the gaps filled with an impregnated metal having a lower melting point. Impregnation should be carried out in an inert or reducing atmosphere and the cathodes should be outgassed before use. The cathode 1 is surrounded by a nickel cylinder 9 and is spaced from a ring anode 3 by a mica disc 6 and a steatite ring 7. The glass envelope 10 is filled with an inert gas such as argon and is provided with a quartz window 13. In a modified lamp (Fig. 10, not shown) an additional insulating disc is provided between the disc 6 and the anode 3.
