Abstract
<PICT:0967434/C4-C5/1> An image display device comprises means to supply electric signals to a cathode-ray tube 1 having a luminescent screen 4 arranged so that the luminescent output of the screen constitutes the input radiation of an image intensifier 7 comprising electroluminescent elements 10 and photo-conductive elements 17 in an insulating binder connected in an electric circuit in series with means 22 for supplying alternating voltage, each electroluminescent element being associated with two photo-conductive elements, and rectifying means 20, 21 or battery means to supply biasing direct potentials of different polarities to the two photo-conductive elements, the luminescent screen 4 of the cathode-ray tube comprising a single phosphor layer with a relatively short persistence, of which the decay time is not less than 10-3 sec., the spectral emission curve of the phosphor layer substantially matching the spectal sensitivity curve of the photo-conductive elements. The photo-conductive element layer 17 is in contact with linear electrodes 16 of silver or a dried aqueous graphite suspension and with auxiliary electrodes 13 of aluminium or silver. The material of the photo-conductive elements 17 can be granular cadmium sulphide or cadmium selenide in an insulating binder such as nitrocellulose and the phosphor layer of the screen 4 can be zinc phosphate activated with manganese in a potassium silicate binder. Zinc sulphide-selenide activated with silver is also referred to in connection with the phosphor layer but is stated to be inefficient. The electroluminescent element layer 10 can be zinc sulphide activated with copper and aluminium in a binder such as urea formaldehyde. A glass carrier plate 8, a tin oxide transparent electrode 9, an opaque reflecting layer 11 of white magnesium dioxide or titanium dioxide in a urea formaldehyde binder, a current diffusing layer 12 of conductive cadmium sulphide, and ribs 14 of powdered glass in an epoxy resin binder are also provided.
