Abstract

800,571. Winding lace machine bobbins. PRICE, R. A., PRICE, J. H., PRICE, W. H., and PRICE, R. R. April 25, 1956 [Feb. 14, 1955], No. 29571/54. Class 74 (1). [Also in Group IX] Lace machine bobbins are wound in a machine that has means for masking the periphery of one of the side plates and guiding threads between the plates to facilitate threading up. A slide 60 feeds bobbins individually from a stack 59 to the slotted end of a tray 86 from which they are removed by guide members 4, 5 carried by a bifurcated arm 90 mounted for rotation around a spindle 80. Before receiving a bobbin, guide member 5 is in its lowest position but is raised by a cam rise 73 against which a spherical stud 7 acts so that a stud in the guide member 5 engages the hole in the bobbin. As the stud 7 engages a rise 71, guide members close together and the bobbin is securely engaged in a dished part of a guide member 4 so that the upper side plate of the bobbin is shrouded. As the arm 90 continues to rotate, thread extending from a bobbin carried on another arm is guided by the member 4 between the plates of the empty bobbin. The thread is then cut and winding starts on the fresh bobbin. Continuous rotation of the arm 90 brings wound bobbins to a fork 33 that directs them down a shoot 36 to a storage cylinder 37. The amount of thread wound on a bobbin is dependent on the relative rate of rotation of a chain wheel 1, driving the bobbins through sprockets 2 and members 4, and the arms 90. Tension on the thread is graudally reduced during winding and as the tension is reduced the bight of thread passing to the bobbin is increased in length by movement of an arm 48 so that, at the instant of cutting, a length of slack thread is provided which assists in wrapping the thread round the empty bobbin. A stop motion is operated on breakage of the thread or if a bobbin should jam between the members 4, 5. According to the Provisional Specification, the guide member that shrouds a bobbin plate may be non- rotatable and only mask a portion of the plate's periphery or it may be a disc having a bobbin receiving recess in each face. A multiplicity of such discs may be mounted on a mandrel carrying several bobbins to be simultaneously wound. A machine is described in which such bobbin assemblies are releasably mounted on a conveyer and carried in turn to a winding station.
