Abstract
In a process for the distillation, in apparatus at least partly constructed of stainless steel, of a mixture of aliphatic acids, including a minor proportion of formic acid, obtained by the oxidation of hydrocarbons or ketones the corrosion of the stainless steel is minimized by the addition of peroxides (including organic peracids) to the mixture. The acid mixture is obtained by the oxidation of lower aliphatic hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen and generally comprises an aqueous mixture of formic, acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Peroxides mentioned are hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, performic acid, t-butyl hydroperoxide and mixtures either containing them or yielding them on contact with the acids. They are used in amounts generally not exceeding 5 per cent wt. and preferably less than 2 per cent wt. The process is applicable in apparatus constructed from any available stainless steel, e.g. steels containing chromiums, nickel and molybdenum or titanium.
