Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] In oxygen breathing apparatus, a container for gas under pressure having a depressible non - return valve which is closed against a seating by the pressure of the gas, the outer end of the valve stem being recessed in a valve guide member secured to the container, is combined with a separable control head having an enclosed chamber for a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston which is movable away from the valve seating by pressure of gas issuing from the container and which supports a plunger projecting from the chamber, the plunger being so arranged as to be coaxial with the non-return valve when the control head is secured to the container and to unseat the valve. A gas container 2 is normally closed by a spring-urged non-return valve 3 in a housing 1. The stem 10 of the valve 3 is threaded into a support 3a of hexagonal crosssection which slides in and is recessed in a guide 7. A control head including a housing 15 contains a diaphragm 18 which is movable by gas pressure against a spring 20 and has a central boss 23 into which a plunger 24 is threaded. The plunger 24 is splined into an outer cover 27 which is rotatably displaceable on the housing 15 to axially adjust the plunger 24 in the boss 23. When the housing 1 containing the non- return valve 3 is screwed into the housing 15 and the outer cover 27 is rotated, the plunger 24 presses on the valve stem 10 to unseat the non- return valve 3. Gas then passes from the container 2 through passages 33 to a space 34 below the diaphragm 18 and thence via a filter 35 and a metered orifice, which can be adjusted by a stud 39, to a gas outlet 37, the assembly operating as a diaphragm-controlled reducing valve. A piston may be provided instead of the diaphragm 18. A pressure gauge 11 may be attached to the gas container.
