Abstract
828,510. Respiratory appliances. SPIROTECHNIQUE. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 5723/58. Class 81 (2). A reserve arrangement for underwater breathing apparatus has the reserve valve mechanism located within the inhalation chamber of the regulator, to avoid wastage if leaks occur. A gas cylinder is connected to a coupling member 30 and air, passing down the central duct 34, is led through an annular passage 41 to a spring-loaded ball valve 66 and thence to the seating member 42 of the inhalation valve 20. A diaphragm 15 controls the inhalation valve 20, in the usual manner, through levers 16 and an outlet 12a is connected to the face mask. The air supplied by the cylinder is continuously used until its pressure is insufficient to lift the ball 66 off its seating and the cessation of flow serves as a warning, to the user, of approaching exhaustion of the supply. When this occurs the ball is positively lifted off its seating, to resume the flow of air, by a plunger 70 actuated through a cam 82 by a handle 92. Since the whole of the valve mechanism is located within the inhalation chamber 10, any air which may leak from it passes into the normal breathing supply and there is no wastage.
