Abstract
800,176. Windscreen wipers. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. June 5, 1957 [June 15, 1956], No. 18526/56. Class 138(1). A windscreen wiper mechanism comprises a drive member 12 which has attached to it a gear segment 11 with a pitch circle centre B. The drive member 12 is able to pivot about the shaft 9. A second segment 7 with pitch circle centre A. engages segment 11 and pivots about shaft 1. Movement of drive member 12 by means of the connecting rod 15 causes the rotation of segments 11 and 7 in such a manner that the respective distances between the pivot axes 9 and 1 and the point of contact between the two segments varies inversely and continuously throughout the arc of oscillation. Thus it is possible to enable the velocity of the wiper 19 to reach a maximum when at the centre of its stroke and to move slowly at the extremeties of its path, thereby reducing noise at the time of reversal. In place of gear segments made of metal or nylon, a frictional engagement between the segments may be employed.
