Abstract

800,112. Addition of volatile metals to . iron or steel. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1957 [Jan. 23, 1956], No. 2166/56. Class 72 Volatilizable metals are added to iron or steel by means of a device comprising a plunger consisting of a billet of the volatilizable metal having its top and sides sheathed in iron or steel, the sheath being a pot - shaped member having a rod attached to and extending through the tops the rod having a radially extending anchor device inside the sheath, and the volatilizable metal filling the space between the rod and the sheath. As shown, a mild steel tube 10 has a closing plate 11 welded thereto and a threaded bolt 14 passes through a stud 13 welded to the plate 11. The volatilizable metal 12, e.g. magnesium or a rare earth metal, is cast into the tube and is anchored therein by a washer 15 welded to the rod 14. The end 16 of the volatilizable metal may be coated with a refractory material or a steel plate may be tack welded to the end of the tube. The device may be used for the addition of magnesium or cerium to cast iron in the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron.
