799,946. Powder metallurgy. STOESSER, W., WOLFF, F. M., and MODEL, A. May 9, 1957 [May 9, 1956], No. 14775/57. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XII] In a method of and apparatus for producing metal strip, metal powder (e.g. copper) is moulded at 4 into strip 5, wound upon a reel 6, inserted into and passed through a furnace 7 to sinter the reeled strip, unwound from the reel whilst within the furnace (at 8), its forward end passed still heated directly to a rolling mill 10 to finish the strip, and the finished strip finally coiled, as at 12. The furnace is preferably filled with a protective gas, e.g. hydrogen, and a guide channel 9 which may also be heated is provided. End chambers 15, 16 with gates 13, 14 act as air locks the reels entering full and leaving empty through doors 17, 18 respectively; the chambers may also be evacuated. The loaded reels roll slowly along the inclined bottom of the furnace until at 8 they are unwound by the pull of the rolls 10 or by other means outside the furnace.
