Abstract

A germicidal composition comprising a non-ionic carrier-iodine complex in the form of a solution of iodine with the non-ionic carrier wherein a portion of the total iodine is chemically bound to the carrier and the major portion of the total iodine is loosely bound to the carrier and titratable as free iodine, the carrier being a compound of the formula HO(C2H4O)x(C3H6O)y (C2H4O(x1-H, where y equals at least 15, and preferably the group (C3H6O)y has a molecular weight within the range 1501 to 1800, and (C2H4O)x + ta\xte1 equals 20 to 90 per cent of the total weight of the compound, and the total iodine present in the complex is within a range having as a lower limit the amount to provide a germicidally effective quantity of loosely bound titra-table iodine and as an upper limit about 28 per cent by weight of the complex. The composition may contain about 0.5 to 3 per cent of an acid, e.g. hydrochloric, compatible with iodine and with the non-ionic carrier. A nonylphenol ethylene oxide that has preferably from about 8 to 9 mols. of ethylene oxide per mol. of nonyl-phenol may be added to prevent cloudiness in the solution. Solid, water-soluble compositions inert to iodine under conditions of use, e.g. ureanitrate, sodium acid sulphate, solid organic acid, preferably citric acid or urea may be added to serve as protective agents for the iodine. Lozenges may have incorporated therein 1 to 5 per cent of the composition. Specification 731,603, [Group IV (a)], is referred to.
