Abstract

The invention comprises a composition having a major amount of a water-soluble nonionic surface-active agent of the formula <FORM:0759295/IV(a)/1> wherein the group <FORM:0759295/IV(a)/2> represents the residue of a water-insoluble polyoxyalkylene glycol; and in which R is a saturated alkyl group containing 10 or fewer carbon atoms; b is an integer whose value is low when the number of carbon atoms in R is great and high when the number of carbon atoms in R is low, b being 2 or 3 when R contains 10 carbon atoms and from 15 to 50 when R is methyl; and wherein the groups HO(CH2CH2O)a and (CH2CH2O)cH represent water-solubilizing polyoxyethylene groups of sufficient length to render the product water-soluble, and in which a and c are integers whose sum increases as the value of b increases, the sum of a and c being from 8 when b is 15 or less, to 100 when b is 50, said nonionic surface-active agent having combined therewith a minor amount of iodine and said composition being characterized by the fact that iodine is not precipitated when the composition is diluted with water and that the major portion of the iodine is present as available iodine, a minor amount thereof as iodide ion and a still smaller amount as bound iodine. Available iodine can be directly titrated with sodium thiosulphate, iodide ion is determined by reducing with sodium acid sulphite, adding excess silver nitrate and nitric acid and back-titrating with ammonium thiocyanate and subtracting the amount of available iodine. Bound iodine is the difference between available and ionic iodine and total iodine. A series of such complexes is prepared by heating iodine with various polyoxyethylene ethers of polypropylene oxides. Four of the ethers were prepared according to U.S.A. Specification 2,674,619. The fifth was prepared by condensing a polypropylene oxide of molecular weight 2000 with 30 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide. The products contain about 10 per cent total iodine, but amounts up to about 30 per cent can be incorporated. The ethers may be of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,674,619. The product may be prepared as a concentrate, to which at the point of use may be added water, additional amounts of polyoxyethylene ether of polypropylene oxide, or other surface-active agents such as those obtained by reacting alkylphenols, alcohols of 10 to 18 carbon atoms or fatty acids with ethylene oxide, or amonic surface-active agents such as alkylaryl sulphonates, and higher fatty alcohol sulphonates and sulphates. Quaternary ammonium germicides such as mixed alkyl (C8H17 to C18H37) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride may also be added. Preparations containing about 10 per cent iodine are specifically described though up to 30 per cent can be incorporated in some cases. For hand washing 1 to 2 per cent is sufficient, and 10 per cent for sanitary surfaces. The product may be prepared as a concentrate to which may be added water, additional amounts of the polyoxyethylene ether of polypropylene oxide or other surface-active agents such as those obtained by reacting alkylphenols, alcohols of 10 to 18 carbon atoms or fatty acid with ethylene oxide, or anionic surface-active agents such as alkyl aryl sulphonates and higher fatty alcohol sulphates and sulphonates.
