Abstract

A washing and cleansing composition having low foaming tendency and high detersive power comprises: (a) a water soluble surface active ethylene oxide adduct with (1) a polypropylene glycol having a minimum molecular weight of 1000, (2) a primary or secondary, straight or branched chain aliphatic alcohol having 8-24 carbon atoms or (3) a mono-, di- or trisubstituted alkyl phenol having a total of 8-24 carbon atoms in the alkyl portion, (b) a water-insoluble but water dispersible surface active dialkylphenol-ethylene oxide adduct having the general formula <FORM:1118297/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 and R2 are straight or branched chain alkyl substituents having 8-12 carbon atoms and n is a number such that the adduct is water insoluble but water dispersible. The ratio of component (a) to component (b) is from 1:9 to 1:1. The foaming capacity can be further reduced while maintaining or improving the detergent power by adding a further water insoluble but water dispersible ether adduct of general formula X-O(CH2.CH2O)nH (c) wherein X is a monoalkyl group having 8-24 carbon atoms, a monoalkyl aryl group having 8-16 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, or a trialkyl aryl group having a total of 8-24 carbon atoms in the alkyl chains and n is as defined above. The addition of the third component is particularly useful for washing at temperatures between 40-60 DEG C. In the ternary composition the amount of component A in relation to the total amount of B and C should be 1:9 to 1:1 preferably 1:2. The compositions of the invention may also contain builders and/or bleaching agents.
