Class 143 Alloy ingredients are fed in predetermined proportions to a melting furnace (not shown) by automatic feed weighers A, B the vibratory feeders 5, 6 of which are stopped when the associated weigher has operated and are restarted only after both the weighers have operated. Each weigher comprises a valve 9, 30 supported on a stem 10 by an electromagnet 13, 31 which is overcome when the weight of material on the valve reaches a predetermined value so allowing the valve to open and discharge the weighed portion of ingredient into a common pipe 23 which is closed by further valve 27 forming part of a similar weigher set to discharge under the total weight of material delivered by weighers A and B. Initial movement of stem 10 operates a micro switch 15 which de-energizes the associated vibrator and also, by de-energizing the associated electro magnet 13 or 31 and energizing an electromagnet 16, accelerates opening movement of the valve. When each valve is fully open a beam 18a closes an associated micro switch 20 or 29 each of which is in series with a further micro switch (not shown), which is closed when valve 27 opens, and a relay (not shown) which, when operated, re-energizes the electromagnets 13, 31 and vibrators 5, 6 so restarting the cycle. The ingredients are fed to the furnace by a vibrator 25 and pipe 26. Rods 10 are provided with weight pans 22 which facilitate adjustment of weigher A, B. In various modifications (not shown) (a) the accelerating electromagnets 16 act directly on rods 10, (b) a cylindrical shell mounted within tubes 7 for limited longitudinal movement prevents material sticking to the side of the tube, and (c) valve 27 is dispensed with.
