Abstract

<PICT:0799304/III/1> A hosepipe is lined with a plastic material such as natural or synthetic rubber or thermoplastic synthetic resin, e.g. a polyvinyl resin, by inserting a tube of the plastic material, inflating the tube to bring it into continuous contact with the inside of the hose, then heating the outside with one or more high-velocity streams or jets of a heated gaseous medium which is circulated in an enclosed endless path in course of which it is heated in order to bond the lining. As shown, apparatus for performing the heating step consists of a plurality of nozzles 2 which may be annular (for treating one pipe) or rectangular and arranged in opposing pairs (for treating a number of pipes simultaneously) and a pump 6 and heater 7 to provide a circulating supply of hot air, mounted on a carriage arranged to run on rails so as to treat a continuous length (e.g. 100 feet) of pipe in one operation. A similar apparatus without the heater may follow, to cool the pipe to a convenient temperature. An external coating which may be of polyvinyl chloride may be sprayed on the outside of the hoses by annular nozzles each surrounding one hose adjacent to the inlet to the bonding unit.
