971,737. Stretching thermoplastic films. LINDAUER DORNIER G.m.b.H. July 20, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 27976/62. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] In a frame for stretching a thermoplastic film of synthetic organic material and having travelling clip chains and means for supplying heat to the film, each clip chain is cooled over at least the last part of its return path in a cooling duct through which cooling air flows. Each clip chain may be additionally cooled by fluid sprays and by passage of cooling liquid through a tube or tubes. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a thermoplastic film F is gripped at both sides by tensioning clips of a clip chain 1 and is carried forward to a heating zone. Each clip chain passes, on its return path, through cooling duct 2 into which air is injected in direction of the arrows, and from which air is exhausted. At the transition point between parallel and diverging clip paths, the ducts are made of flexible material. For thermal insulation, a closed housing 4 may be provided. In Fig. 2 a clip chain 1 running on guide rails 9 supported by 8, and passing through cooling duct 2 formed by double-walled, heat-insulated shield 5, is additionally cooled by water sprays 7 and by tubes 6 through which water is passed.
