Abstract
798,713. Cutting tobacco. S.A.S.I.B. SOC. PER AZIONI SCIPIONE INNOCENTIBOLOGNA. Aug. 10, 1956 [Aug. 11, 1955], No. 24629/56. Class 5(1). [Also in Group XXIII] In shredding tobacco issuing from a mouthpiece by rotary cutters 7 which are continuously sharpened by a grinding cylinder 17 and in which the cutter rotor 5 and the grinder 17 is continuously moved towards the mouthpiece to take up grinding wear, undue advance of the rotor is declutched by electrical contacts on rotor and mouthpiece, and after a short period when the contacts are broken again the rotor and drive is clutched in again to resume the advance. Thegrinder 17, Fig. 2, pivoted at 128 rests by gravity on the cutters and is dressed by diamond 27 lowered into contact by a handle 37. In starting the machine from position, Fig. 6, in which the clutch lever 14 is neutral and roller 154 clear of cam 57, switch 75 open, electromagnet de-energized and pawl 47 engaged in the stop ratchet wheel 44 and pawl 47 engaged with ratchet wheel 45, the starting is as follows, Switch 75 is closed to start rotation of rotor 5, to energise electromagnet 52 which pulls pawl 46 from 44 and permits rotation of shaft 42 clockwise, and the rotor is advanced towards the mouthpiece by handwheel 43. This advance is stopped when the revolving knives 7 touch the contact 66 thus de-energising 52 and allowing pawl 46 to engage wheel 44. To get automatic feed in by the rotor the conveyer bands are first started by hand moving clutch lever 14 to position, Fig. 7, where the sector 57 is disengaged from bell crank 54 where end roller 154 engages cam 56 and so rocks the shaft 42. As long as the knives 7 do not touch the contact 66, 52 is energised and disengages pawl 46 from ratchet 44, permitting shaft 42 to revolve clockwise and the rotor to advance. When the knives 6 touch contact 66 to energise 52 and lock the ratchet 44 of pawl 46 whose tail 61 pushes the driving pawl 59 out of contact with the teeth of the feed wheel 45, Fig. 8 Roller 154 however remains engaged with cam 56 which rocks lever 54 and stops advance of the rotor. The grinder however continues to advance to sharpen the knives 7 which when thus ground down cease to make contact with 66 whereby electro-magnet is again energised to start the step by step advance of the rotor sets knives 7 towards the mouthpiece. When the knives are worn out and need adjusting outwards the cam 64, Fig. 8 (not shown) opens switch 65 stopping current to main motor thus stopping the machine. A mechanical safety stop is also provided whereby an abutment 78 stops lever 76 to lift lever 54 out of contact with cam 56 thus stopping the advance of the rotor. U.S.A. Specification 2,819,746 is referred to.
