Abstract

798,242. Travelling wave tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Aug. 10, 1955 [Aug. 10, 1954], No. 23069/55. Class 39(1). A travelling wave tube has a delay line consisting of two combs with parallel bosses wherein the teeth of the two combs are staggered relatively to one another and one or more electron beams having rectilinear electron trajectories is or are directed between the planes substantially parallel to the bosses of the combs. In one form, Fig. 1, two combs 1, 2 having teeth 3, 4 ; 8, 9 are disposed so that the field between corresponding teeth of the two combs extends at about 45 degrees or even 65 degrees to the direction of the electron beam. One or more electron beams of electrons may be projected between the two comb lines, and a plurality of electron beams with different velocities or in opposite directions can be used. The comb teeth are square or rectangular in cross section, and the distance between the planes of the comb teeth is equal to the distance between adjacent teeth of a comb. In a modification, Fig. 2, the comb backs lie in the same plane and only the teeth lie in different planes ; the beam is projected perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The device may be used for generating, amplifying or mixing, and may utilize a backward wave.
