Abstract

1,134,743. Cathode-ray tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 Nov., 1965 [27 Nov., 1964], No. 48262/64. Heading H1D. An electron discharge tube for use as a digital calculator store comprises two mesh screens RG1, RG2 between which electron bunches representative of the information to be stored are trapped by reflection in individual channels, the electrons travelling back-and-forth in tight helical paths under a focusing field set up by permanent magnet or electromagnet SD within an equipotential region ER provided by an encircling tubular electrode. Auxiliary accelerator/retarder annular electrodes AN are provided as shown and the inputs are optically supplied to a photo-cathode PEC, e.g. through light channels, and the outputs are derived from an array of semi-conductor PN junctions SCD or from an electron-multiplier array. The mesh screens BG1, RG2 also act as input and output gates and may each comprise a co-ordinate array of individually biased wires or two axially spaced co-ordinate arrays mutually staggered in both directions. The store may be operated in a serial or in a parallel mode and a feedback loop may be provided to extend the storage period indefinitely.
