Abstract
798,157. Governors. LOGAN, H. H. April 13, 1956 [June 7, 1955], No. 11280/56. Class 57. A centrifugal governor comprises weights 59, 65 on arms 58, 63 pivotally mounted on a rotatable structure and having cam surfaces 68, 70 engaging cam followers on a cross-head 77 secured to the governor spindle 72 which is loaded to oppose the outward movement of the weights by springs 92, 96. The spindle 72 is axially slidable in a stem 10, rotatably mounted in bearings 12, 13 and driven through bevel gearing by a shaft 24, and in a top block 33, both of which are secured between spaced side plates 28, 29 carrying roller bearings 34, 36 and 35, 37 for pins 49, 53 to which the weight arms 63 and 58 are respectively secured. The crosshead 77 is screwed to the spindle 72 and carries at its ends roller bearings 85, 86 whose outer races act as cam followers and engage the cam surfaces 70, 68. When the governor is at rest, the arms 58, 63 extend upwardly, as in Fig. 1, and are each at an angle of between five and fifteen degrees to the spindle axis, the inward movement of the arms being limited by the edges 89, 90 of a stop plate 87 secured to the block 33. The gravitational force of the weights thereby assists the centrifugal force during operation of the governor, the cam surfaces 68, 70 being provided with oppositely curved portions 97, 98 that act on the cam followers as limit stops at maximum governor speed. The spring 96 freely surrounds and, in the free state, is shorter than the spring 92 so that the springs are sequentially brought into operation.
