Abstract

584,849. Torsional vibration-dampers. DUNTOV, Z. ARKUS-, and RUBISSOW, G. A. July 20, 1943, No. 11771. [Class 108 (iii)] A torsional vibration-damper for a shaft or other rotating member comprises a weight or weights and a mass or masses mounted to rotate with the member, the weight or weights being movable relatively to the member for damping torsional vibrations thereof and the mass or masses being subject to centrifugal force against the action of resilient means so as to vary automatically the damping effect of the weight or weights, the mass or masses being operatively independent of the weight or weights. As shown, weights L are operatively interconnected with the shaft S by pins 53 which are secured in a flywheel F and in the weights L and pass freely through openings 54 in a disc D mounted to rotate freely within predetermined limits on the shaft. Connecting roller pins 55 are mounted in guideways 56, 57 in the weights and disc. Balancing masses B are movable in guideways 59 in the disc D under the action of centrifugal force against the action of resilient means such as springs 66 in order to vary the damping effect of the weights L which, when torsional vibrations occur in the shaft are oscillated outwards about the pins 53 under the action of centrifugal force. Further balancing masses 64 acted on by resilient means may also be arranged at any suitable angle to a radius 62 which is at rightangles to a radius 60 passing centrally through the lower mass B. Shock-absorbing means 72 on the weights L are adopted to engage limiting stops 71 on the disc D. In modifications, each balancing mass may be (a) acted on by springs operating in tension, by blade springs, or by pneumatic or hydraulic means; (b). guided by side rollers or ball-bearings ; (c) mounted in curved guides ; (d) partially mounted on the disc D; and (e) adapted to move away from the centre of rotation step by step, e.g., by means of a spring-pressed or other projection on the mass or disc D engaging a toothed part or projection on the disc or mass.
