[Also in Group XXIV] Intermittent reciprocation of a rotating spindle a, which may carry a valve-lapping tool t, is effected by the periodic interference between the wedge-shaped end of an arm h on the rotating spindle a with the end of an arm j, Fig. 2, on an axially fixed spindle c which is rotated at a different speed so that interference only occurs after a plurality of revolutions. As shown, two spindles a, b, each carrying a lapping tool, are rotated by a belt g in the opposite direction to the spindle c. The arm j coacts with the arms h, i on the spindles a, b to raise them periodically, return being effected by gravity, spring, hydraulic or pneumatic means. Slip in the belt drive may provide irregular reciprocation and where this is not desired the belt may be replaced by a chain drive. The tool t is held in a chuck m whose arbor n loosely engages a bore in the spindle a, so that the lapping pressure is determined by the weight of the tool and chuck. This weight can be varied or can be supplemented by springs in the spindle bore. Threaded rings q on the spindle are adjusted to lie just below a retaining pin o on the chuck arbor to lift the tool t when the spindle a is raised.
