Abstract

959,491. Machine tool details; grinding. M. FRANK. Nov. 16, 1961 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 41121/61. Headings B3C and B3D. An attachment for a boring or grinding machine to enable the tool or grinding wheel to be adjusted at right angles to the boring axis by a screwed spindle comprises a wheel which rotates the spindle due to engagement with a stationary member when the boring sleeve is retracted, and the stationary member is retracted by a cam. The attachment 4 is secured to boring spindle 2 by a chuck 3 and a tool holder 10 is slidably carried by a part 8. A screwed spindle 11 is axially fixed to a plate 15 on the holder but can rotate therein, and engages in a screwed bore of a gear-wheel 12 so that as the spindle is manually rotated, wheel 12 is held against rotation by a friction plate 13 and the tool holder is adjusted. Wheel 12 meshes with a gear-wheel 18 on a shaft 19 and a collar 19a on the latter forms a slipping clutch with a gear-wheel 21. Gears 29 mesh with gear 21 and have gears 26 rigidly secured thereto the peripheries of which project into a peripheral groove 28 in part 8. A plunger 30 is mounted in a crank cam 31 carried by a rod 32 and is spring urged towards spindle 2 by a spring 34, such movement being limited by an adjustable stop 48 and a bell-crank lever mechanism 40, 41 normally holds plunger 30 in an inoperative position. In operation when sleeve 1 is retracted, lever 40 strikes a stop 43 and plate 42 is released, thus allowing plunger 30 to engage part 8 below wheels 26. When a recess 47 is aligned with the plunger the latter is lifted into a groove 28 on part 8, thus rotating wheels 26 as they move past the plunger, and the tool is adjusted. The amount of rotation of wheel 26 is governed by the amount of advance of the plunger towards the wheels and cams 50 may be provided to retract the plunger after each wheel 26 has been rotated. To prevent the tool from removing too much material a stop 60 of holder 10 engages a stop 61 adjustable on part 8, whereupon clutch 19a, 21, slips. Gears 26 may be omitted and gears 29 would then be actuated by plunger 30.
