This invention relates to a device for retarding the disengagement of an automatic machine.
In certain machines as, for instance, in automatic grinding or screwing machines, owing to the deflection of the tool holders under the effect of the force necessary for removing the chips or for holding the grinding tool against the work piece, the position of the tool with regard to the Work piece is, at the end of its transverse stroke, not always the same and, in consequence, the last diameter machined is not equal from work piece to work piece. In machines attended to by hand it is usual to make some additional longitudinal movements in the transverse end position of the tool in order to be quite sure with regard to the definite dimension of the work piece.
Object of this invention is to arrive at the same result in automatic machines by retarding their disengagement which, up till now, has been controlled by the stop for the transverse stroke of the tool carrier. The retarding device forming the object of the present invention comprises a mechanism for disengaging the machine, which only becomes active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements after the stop of the transverse carrier.
The said disengaging mechanism comprises by preference a driver whose initial position is adjustable in order to determine the number of these supplemental longitudinal movements. This driver is fixed to a ratchet Wheel which is only operated by the longitudinal movements of the carrier after the termination of its transverse stroke. For this purpose a lever is used, which is released on the contact of the stops for the transverse stroke of the carrier.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example, a device for retarding the disengagement in an internal grinding machine,

The frame I of the machine in question carries a fixed headstock 2. Between the bearings a clutch 3 is mounted by means of which the shaft 4 of the machine can be coupled with a pulley 5, driven by a non-illustrated transmission.
This clutch 3 is controlled by means of a lever 6, pivoted at 1 on one of the bearings. On its lower end it has a feeler 8 lying in reach of a driver 9 fixed to a ratchet wheel l0 loosely mounted on an axle attached to the frame.
The mainshaft of the machine drives by a toothed gearing H a worm l2 engaging a worm wheel. A cam I 3 is fixed to the Worm wheel, controlling the longitudinal movement of the tool carrier M.
For this purpose a lever i5 is provided, pivoted at It on the frame, Which,,under the influence of a spring I! abuts by means of a roller on the cam !3. This spring i7, is, at the one end, fixed to the frame and, at the other end, to a pin l8 attached to an extension it of the carrier l4 connected with the lever I5 by means of a rod 29.
On the extension i9 of the carrier It a lever 2| is pivoted, having, on one end, a notch 22 and on the other end, an adjustable feeler 23 cooperating with a pawl 25, by means of which the ratchet wheel H! can be gradually operated. Lever 25 carries, besides, a weight 24 for tilting the same in order to bring the feeler 23 under the pawl 25 and to rotate the ratchet wheel in for bringing the driver 9 in contact with feeler 8 and, in this way, for disengaging the mainshait by opening the clutch 3.
Th carrier !4 carries a grinding wheel 26 driven by a pulley 2'1. The longitudinal movements of the carrier imparted by the cam I 3 make the grinding Wheel penetrate into the driver 28 which a ring 29 is clamped fast, whose inside is to be ground. The carrier i is, in a usual manner, mounted on a slide whose transverse movement is caused by a spring and controlled by a screw 34 to the end of which a ratchet wheel lit is fixed. This latter is, on each termination of the longitudinal stroke of the carrier l6, rotated by a certain angle by means of a lever 3| controlling the pawl 32 and displaced at the end of the longitudinal stroke by means of a stop 33 fixed to the frame I. At the end of each longitudinal stroke of the tool carrier M the screw 34 is rotated by a certain angle in order to allow the carrier Hi to advance.
The end of the transverse stroke of the tool carrier is limited by the screw 36 which then abuts on a stop 31 under which the notched end of the lever 2| is held by a piston 38 which is under the influence of a spring 39 and which has an extension 40 coaxial to the screw 36 and traversing the stop 31,
At the end of the transverse stroke, this screw 36 abuts on the extension 40 and releases lever 2|, which under the influence of the weight 24, tilts in order to bring the feeler 23 into contact with the pawl 25. On each stroke of the carrier, strokes which, owing to the abutment of the screw 36 on the stop 31, have no influence whatever upon the transverse position of the tool, the ratchet wheel I is rotated by one tooth and, according to the initial position given to it, more or less supplemental longitudinal movements are necessary in order to bring the driver 9 into contact with the feeler 8 and to open the clutch 3. The moment of the opening 01- the clutch, that is of the disengagement of the machine, therefore, no longer corresponds to the end of the transverse stroke of the tool carrier [4. It is, therefore, possible in this extreme position of the grinding wheel to execute a certain number of longitudinal movements which are more or less effective according to the conditions under which the preceding work has been effected, but which finally result in dimensions of the work piece corresponding to the normal tolerances of the machine.
If it be a question of another machine, e. g. an automatic screwing machine, the principle of construction of the retarding device would be the same.
What I claim is:
1. In an automatic machine, a tool carrier arranged to carry out longitudinal movements and a transverse stroke, an adjustable stop destined to limit said transverse stroke, and a device for retarding the disengagement of the automatic machine comprising, a mechanism for the disengagement of the machine, arranged to become only active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements at the end of the transverse stroke of said carrier, a ratchetwheel operable only after stopping of said carrier, and a driver fixed to said ratchet-wheel and destined to act upon said mechanism, the'initial position of said driver being adjustable in order to determine the number of supplemental longitudinal movements of said carrier.
2. In an automatic machine, a tool carrier arranged to carry out longitudinal movements and a transverse stroke, an adjustable stop destined to limit said transverse stroke, a longitudinal operating device for said carrier, and a device for retarding the disengagement of the automatic machine, comprising, a mechanism for the disengagement of the machine, arranged to become only active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements at the end of the transverse stroke of said carrier, a ratchetwheel arranged to be driven by said longitudinal operating device only after stopping of said carrier and a driver fixed to said ratchet-wheel and destined to act upon said mechanism, the initial position of said driver being adjustable in order to determine the number of supplemental longitudinal movements of said carrier.
3. In an automatic machine, a tool carrier arranged to carry out longitudinal movements and a transverse stroke, stops for stopping the transverse stroke of said carrier, a longitudinal operating device for said carrier, and a device for retarding the disengagement of the automatic machine, comprising a mechanism for the disengagement of the machine, arranged to become only active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements at the end of the transverse stroke of said carrier, a ratchet-wheel, a lever coupling said longitudinal operating device and said ratchet-wheel, arranged to be released on the contact of said stops, and a driver fixed to said ratchet-wheel and destined to act upon said mechanism, the initial position of said driver being adjustable in order to determine the number of supplemental longitudinal movements of said carrier.
4. In an automatic machine, a tool carrier arranged to carry out longitudinal movements and a transverse stroke, stops for stopping the transverse stroke of said carrier, a longitudinal operating device for said carrier, and a device for retarding the disengagement of the automatic machine, comprising, a mechanism for the disengagement of the machine, arranged to become only active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements at the end of the transverse stroke of said carrier, a ratchet-wheel, a lever coupling said longitudinal operating device and said ratchet-Wheel. arranged to be held by friction in inactive position and to be released on the contact of said stops and a driver fixed to said ratchet-wheel and destined to act upon said mechanism, the initial position of said driver being adjustable in order to determine the number of supplemental longitudinal movements of said carrier.
5. In an automatic machine, a tool carrier arranged to carry out longitudinal movements and a transverse stroke, stops for stopping the transverse stroke of said carrier, :1. stop screw, a springcontrolled piston, having an extension traversing one of said stops, a longitudinal operating device for said carrier, and a device for retarding the disengagement of the automatic machine, comprising, a mechanism for the disengagement of the machine, arranged to become only active after a certain number of supplemental longitudinal movements at the end of the transverse stroke of said carrier, a ratchet-wheel, a lever coupling said longitudinal operating device and said ratchet-wheel, arranged to be held under said stop by means of said spring controlled piston and to be released on the contact of said stops, and a driver fixed to said ratchet-wheel and destined to act upon said mechanism, the initial position of said driver being adjustable in order to determine the number of supplemental longitudinal movements of said carrier, said extension being arranged to cooperate with said stop screw for releasing said lever.
