The locking means for a sliding door 10 comprises a main, vertically guided, spring influenced bolt 12, Figs. 1 and 2, adapted to engage a socket or stop members 16 of or adjacent to the door's guide track 11 and hand operated from both sides of the door by knobs 14 and 27, Fig. 3; a detent or shoe 20 arranged to hold the bolt in a non- operative position when the door is open but is movable to permit the shooting of bolt 12 when the door is closed; and a snap lock 18 having a bolt 19 automatically engages a sear 17 on bolt 12 when it is shot. The bolt 12 slides in guides 13 and is biased to the operative position by spring 15. The shoe 20, slidably mounted on the door frame member 10a, is biased by a spring 23 to prevent movement of the main bolt 12; a stud 21 attached to member 10a works in a slot 22 in shoe 20 and stud 25 attached to the shoe 20 works in a slot 10b in member 10a. When the door is closed the stud 25 contacts a stop 24 in the door guide track 11 and moves the shoe to allow the bolt 12 to be shot between stop pieces 16. A trigger 26 on the snap fastener 18 withdraws the bolt 19 to permit the raising of the main bolt 12 and so allow the shoe 20 to automatically revert to its forward position. The snap fastener 18 may be operated from the other side of the door by a key and the bolt 12 raised by a knob 27, Fig. 3.
