Abstract

797,523. Laminates; coated fibrous materials. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 36312/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A laminate consists of at least one layer of a web, a permeable fibrous elastomeric material having uniform tensile strength and elasticity in the plane of the material and consisting of randomly disposed fibres bonded together at their points of contact, formed by the method claimed in Specification 794,725, and at least one layer of a different material. This material may be elastic or non-elastic, fibrous or non- fibrous, stretchable or non-stretchable, flexible or rigid, e.g. paper which may be creped or corrugated paper-like sheets formed of asbestos, glass, or mineral fibres, felts, textiles formed of natural artificial, or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, rayon, glass, mineral fibre, needled or pile fabrics, non-woven, including knitted textiles, leather, synthetic resins such as polythene, vinyl compounds, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, regenerated cellulose, cellulose ethers or esters, natural or synthetic rubber, foam or sponge rubber, elastic silicones, metal, wood, wallboard, natural or synthetic stone, ceramic or plastic tile. The layers may be bonded together by vulcanizing or curing the porous fibrous elastomeric material. In examples, woven material sandwiches or is sandwiched between the porous fibrous elastomeric material. For elastic laminates, a flexible sheet material is bonded at spaced intervals to the porous fibrous elastomeric material, typically while this material is under tension. If desired, the flexible sheet may be corrugated, pleated, woven, or bunched in one or two transverse directions. Such laminates may be used for bathing and foundation garments, elastic stockings, angle braces, belts and other articles of dress. By backfilling, coating or impregnating the porous fibrous elastomeric material with rubber latex, silicone or vinyl resins, cellulose derivatives, casein, gelatin, starch and clay, the permeability and porosity can be altered. Thus for a belt the coating, e.g. of rubber latex, may enclose the fibrous elastomeric material while for a watch strap or garter one surface thereof may be uncoated to provide a non-slip surface. A skinned meat carcase wrapping may be formed by attaching an absorbent knitted cotton or rayon fabric to the fibrous elastomeric material which is then back-filled with rubber latex. In a modification, a laminate of limited stretchability may be formed by depositing the fibres of the porous elastomeric material on a permeable non- stretchable fibrous material and forming the elastomeric material in situ, the laminate then being corrugated or creped. Padding for upholstery purposes may be produced by bonding a layer of the fibrous elastomeric material to a layer of sponge or foam rubber.
