Abstract

797,351. Lathe-details. BROWN &. WARD (TOOLS), Ltd. Feb. 27, 1956 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 35326/54. Class 83 (3). Bar-feed 'means for automatic-lathes &c. comprising an endless-chain driven by an electric motor and slipping-clutch, is characterized in that the endless-chain engages sprocket wheels on vertical axes, and that a pin on a link of the chain engages a slot in a pusher-member along which it travels as the pin passes from one run of the chain to the other run. The framework of the feed-device is supported at the machine end by a bracket 26, Fig. 1, secured to the lathe &c. headstock 28a. Adjustable pillars 27 carry the remainder of the framework,' the end-pillar also supporting an electric-motor 5 and gear-box 5a which drive, through an adjustable slip-clutch 6a, 7a, a sprocket 4 for an endless-chain 3. The other end of the device is provided with a second sprocket 8 with hand-adjustment 8a, which supports the chain. A pin 11, Figs. 2 and 3, upstanding from one of the chain-links, engages a cross-slot 10 in a stock-pusher member 9 which is thus reciprocated from one end of the device to the other, while the chain is continuously moved by the driving sprocket. The pusher 9 has a dependent leg 25 which keeps it level, the leg sliding along a plate 24 extending over the length of the device. The stock-bars are supported on the machine-axis by a feedguide 12. A cover 13 with an inclined lug 14 is moved on an inclined support 15 to open a gap at one side of the feed-guide, permitting a fresh stock-bar 2 to be moved from a support 18 into the feed-guide. The cover is moved by a handle 19, Fig. 2, at the machine-end of the device. The drive-clutch slips when the stock reaches a stock-stop, and when a stock-bar is used up the pusher 9 returns to the end away from the machine, when a switch 22 is operated to stop the drive-motor and switch on a light, warning the operator that a fresh stock-bar is required. The pusher is automatically given a quick-return movement by a second electricmotor and the " feed " motor is automatically re-started when the collet of the lathe is closed.
