Abstract
797,245. Lawn mowers. FURNISS, A. E. Nov. 1, 1956, No. 33438/56. Class 6(1). [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for use with power driven mowing machines which enable areas of grass to be mown without the guidance of an operator comprises a shaft 1 secured in the ground, a drum rotatably mounted on the shaft and means for securing the drum against rotation. As shown, the drum has a number of apertures 6 in its upper and lower flanges 3 and 4 preferably arranged in rings of differing diameter into which members 7 are inserted. The drum is rotatably mounted on the shaft 1 by a sleeve 9 the upper end of which has a step adapted to engage a step in a slidable sleeve 11 having a slot 8. A pin 10 extends through the slot 8 and through the shaft 1, the arrangement being such that the sleeve 11 may be raised to permit free rotation of sleeve 9 or lowered so that the two steps engage to stop the drum rotating. A stop 12 prevents the sleeve 9 from sliding down the shaft. One end of a line 5 is secured to the drum, the other end at a point near the front of a power driven mowing machine so that when the machine is set in motion it cuts a spiral path, with the shaft as centre, as the line runs off the drum. Alternatively, with the drum locked, the mower may be made to spiral inwardly as the line runs on to the drum.
