Abstract

797,131. Endless-belt conveyers. NAPIER, D. July 15, 1955 [April 21, 1954], No. 11457/54. Class 78 (1). An endless belt conveyer consists of an endless belt having trolleys or carriages fixed at intervals along its lateral edges, the trolleys or carriages along one edge being independent of those along the other edge, the trolleys or carriages running on respective tracks or cables, the spacing of which is adjusted to cause the belt to run flat or with a slight curvature, or with a greater curvature to form a trough or closed tube, according to requirements, the belt being driven by one or more associated chains. In one form, Figs. 1, 5, an endless belt disposed in upper and lower runs 1 and 2 is provided at intervals along both its edges with trolleys 3 each equipped with a vertical roller 4 and a horizontal roller 5. These rollers engage stationary tracks 6, the tracks for opposite edges of the belt being close together on the upper run to form the belt into a tube and being spaced apart on the return run so that the belt hangs, inverted, in a trough surrounding the upper run. Brackets 7 on the trolleys are connected to a pair of endless chains 8, the brackets of trolleys on opposite edges of the belt being at different elevations so that they overlap on the upper run. The upper run of the belt is opened out or closed up where required for discharging or feeding by divergent or convergent portions of the tracks 6, rollers being disposed to engage the chains 8 at the points of commencement of divergence or convergence. Fig 5 shows the arrangement of guide tracks 6 for the lower run where a curve is negotiated, rollers 15, 16 being disposed to engage the chains 8 where sudden changes of direction occur. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the belt is attached at intervals to an articulated structure consisting of trolley portions 9, 10 pivoted to a central portion 11. The trolley portions have a single roller 12 or a pair of rollers 12, 14 disposed at right angles to one another, these rollers engaging stationary tracks 13. A single endless driving chain 8 is attached to the central portions 11.
