Abstract

797,041. Locking rods and rotary members. PERKINS, Ltd., F., and SPARROW, A. W. March 31, 1955 [April 2, 1954], Class 80 (3). A device for releasably holding a member such as a rod 1, Fig. 1, against a load F comprises at least one pair of balls or rollers 10, 11 adapted to be held against a fixed abutment 2 by a collar 8 under the influence of a latching force L and engage in an annular groove 5 around the rod 5. Movement of the collar 8 to the right against the latching force L will allow the balls to move clear of the groove 5 to free the rod 1. The tripping action may be effected mechanically or electrically, the collar 8 acting as the armature of an electromagnet. A spring may supply the latching force or alternatively the electromagnet may provide the latching force. In a further arrangement the rollers provide a small component in a releasing direction which is normally held by the latching force. In Fig. 10 the invention is applied to a rotary member 19 subjected to a load torque F, the balls 10, 11 engaging arcuate fixed abutments 20 and recesses 23 in the periphery of member 19, and being controlled by a ring 22 with radial lugs 21. In a modified form the positions of member 19 and ring 22 are interchanged.
